The Blurb:
A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for. That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love. Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…
The Review
If I had a wishlist of what I want from a book, it would be this; dystopian, thrilling, great characters, fast paced, sincere relationships, moral issues, a story that leaves me thinking and is also believeable.
It seems like the Holy Grail. So many books promise so much and then fail to deliver. And so when one does manage it you want to ingest it so quickly that all other mundane tasks fall by the wayside - forget washing, or cooking for yourself, or getting any semblance of a good nights sleep. And this is exactly what 'The One' by John Marrs did for me.
This is such an intensely original and brilliant book!
It's slightly dystopian, which is my favourite genre, but its not so wildly futuristic as to put off people that genuinely hate dystopian fiction (although, how could you?!) But it's also lots of other types of genre - dystopia, romance, crime/detective, thriller... it was as if they had all been rolled into one and they were all done equally brilliantly!
It takes this idea of being genetically the perfect match for someone and runs with it - it's such a clever and yet simple concept that you just couldn't predict where it was going to go with it.
The story follows 5 different people, all who have been genetically matched with someone. None of these stories were connected in anyway apart from that main theme and all of them were written so well, that they would almost stand alone as individual stories. There are some great little 'nuggety' surprises as you go along that I did not see coming and it constantly keeps you on your toes. I kept saying to myself, "'I'll put it down at the end of this chapter" and then being completely unable to do so every time. I ended up reading it in a day!
Noula was so overwhelmed by this one she had to take a little nap to get over her excitement!
Originally I gave this a 4 star review, and then I genuinely couldn't think of something I hadn't liked or something that could have been done better. So there, the coveted 5 star review, it does happen.
